Weather sites give you Santiago. This page gives you every stage: the afternoon high, the night, and the chance of rain on the day, for 127 stages of five routes and every month of the year, from ten years of NASA climate records (2015 to 2024). Move the month and watch the Camino change colour; tap a stage for its card.

The meseta in July, Galicia in November

The Camino Francés crosses two climates. On the 9 stages from Burgos to León the July afternoons average 28.9 °C, 30.1 °C into León, and it rains on 2.7 days of the month. In November the same stretch has 10.9 rain days. Galicia, the 7 stages from O Cebreiro, is barely cooler in July, 28.0 °C, but it turns the rain round: in November it rains on 13.5 days of the month, about one day in 2.2, with afternoons of 14.0 °C. Pack for both if you walk both. The packing list splits the route the same way.

How many rainy days on a whole walk

Walk the whole Francés, one stage a day from the middle of the month, and add up each day’s chance of rain where you are that day. Starting in the middle of July you should expect about 4 days of rain; in the middle of November, about 13. A May start gives 9, an October start 12. The weather is only half of the choice; the best time to walk weighs it against the crowds and the light.

Days of rain on the whole Francés, by the month you start 11Jan11Feb11Mar10Apr9May6Jun4Jul6Aug11Sept12Oct13Nov11Dec caminantes.co

The cold nights

The cold is at night and it is about height, not the calendar. In April the coldest night on the Francés is at La Laguna de Castilla, at 1,154 m: about 2.4 °C. The passes are colder still than these figures show, because a mountain top is colder than the area around it; see the Camino in winter for the months when that matters most.

The other routes

The same figures for every route on this page, from the stages of our plan. A May or October start counts the rain days on the whole route walked one stage a day.

For the forecast

This page is the climate: what a month is usually like, averaged over ten years. For the next few days, use the forecast of Spain’s weather service, AEMET, for the town you will sleep in.

How these figures were made

Every figure comes from NASA’s POWER records, which model the weather from observations on cells about 50 km across, day by day from 2015 to 2024. Each stage end on our route tracks is matched to its cell (132 stage ends, 38 cells). Temperatures are corrected for height, 0.7 °C cooler for every 100 m a stage end sits above its cell. A day counts as rainy at 2 mm, the level at which the records best match Spain’s weather service at León, Logroño and Santiago: within 1.5 rain days a month. Afternoon highs run about 1.1 °C above those stations’ 1981 to 2010 averages, so read them as a little warm. Rain amounts are left out: in millimetres the records are not good enough for single towns.

Common questions

What is the weather like on the Camino de Santiago?

It depends on where and when. On the Camino Francés the meseta averages 28.9 °C on July afternoons with rain on 2.7 days of the month, while Galicia in November has rain on 13.5 days. The map on this page shows every stage for every month.

Which month has the best weather for the Camino?

For the fewest rainy days on the whole Francés, start in the middle of July: about 4 days of rain, but the hottest afternoons. A May start avoids both extremes: about 9 days of rain, and no afternoon above 27 °C.

How cold does it get on the Camino in spring?

In April the coldest night on the Francés is at La Laguna de Castilla, about 2.4 °C. Mountain passes are colder than that, so carry a warm layer in spring.

Where can I see the weather forecast for the Camino?

This page shows the climate, averaged over ten years. For the forecast, use AEMET, Spain’s weather service, for the town you will sleep in.
