O Cebreiro on the Camino Francés: the climb, the village and the way down, measured
By August Frederik Kramer · Last updated 29 September 2026
O Cebreiro is the village at the top of the steepest climb on the Camino Francés since day one over the Pyrenees. It sits at 1,293 m, 153.3 km from Santiago. You climb 756 m to reach it from Trabadelo, and most of that comes at the end: the last 6.8 km average 8.7%, which is steeper than Alpe d’Huez, the Tour de France’s most famous climb.
How high is O Cebreiro?
1,293 m where the track passes the village. The track keeps rising for another 1.2 km, to 1,349 m, so you will see both figures quoted. They are both right: one is the village, the other the top of the climb just past it.
It is not the highest point of the Francés. That is 1,505 m, a few days earlier. But it is higher than almost any other Camino goes: of the 9 other routes we measure, only the Vía de la Plata climbs higher anywhere, to 1,352 m.
The climb to O Cebreiro
Measured from Trabadelo, the climb is 18.4 km long and gains 756 m. It comes in two parts. The first 11.6 km along the valley gain only 163 m. Then, from 701 m, every kilometre climbs more than 3%, all the way to the village: 591 m in 6.8 km. Here it is to scale, from Trabadelo over the top and down to Triacastela.

The steepest single kilometre gains 139 m, a gradient of 13.9%. On the whole Camino Francés, only day one over the Pyrenees has a steeper kilometre, at 144 m.
Steeper than Alpe d’Huez
Alpe d’Huez is the climb the Tour de France made famous: 13.8 km at an average of 8.1%. The steep part of O Cebreiro averages 8.7%. On average, it is the steeper of the two.
It is also about half as long, which is the good news: Alpe d’Huez gains about 1,118 m, O Cebreiro’s steep part 591 m. You are walking, not riding, and nobody times you.
Where to sleep in and around O Cebreiro
Our map of places to sleep near the track has 2 within a kilometre of the village. Below it, the nearest is 4.5 km back down the climb; after it, the nearest is 3.1 km on. From Trabadelo to the village there are 24 in all, most of them down in the valley, and 14 more between the village and Triacastela. For every stage of the route, see where the beds are.
Starting the Camino in O Cebreiro
6,267 pilgrims started in O Cebreiro in 2025, about one in 39 of everyone who finished the Camino Francés. Sarria had 26 times as many.
It qualifies for the Compostela with room to spare: 153.3 km is 53.3 km more than the 100 km the rule asks for. On our plan it is 7 days to Santiago, and you start at the top, not the bottom. See where the last 100 km starts.

After the top
From the village to Triacastela is 20.9 km: 850 m down and 231 m back up on the way. Knees notice this more than lungs.
Santiago lies 1,021 m below O Cebreiro, but the way there is not downhill: from here to the cathedral the track climbs 2,358 m and drops 3,384 m. On our 36-day plan, the village falls on day 30.
Or go round it
The Camino de Invierno leaves the Francés at Ponferrada and reaches Santiago without crossing O Cebreiro. It is 58.6 km longer and climbs 1,505 m more. The trade, step by step, is in the Camino de Invierno guide.
